5. 33’

There is always someone new
someone lighter and less predictable

and though I can’t say which is true

I feel left open


You were born in the morning light

a day-old consciousness clinging on to me

and that you won’t sleep through this first night

my heart is iron



and I leap in circles through my mind and

heaving floodgates, pouring memories

and though I daydream through this first day

I feel alive



and airways open to my lungs and

Pumping blood and aching quadriceps 

that twist and stubble through this first night

and then beyond.



The door is open and in they come

I speak in platitudes and simple thank yous

and though I can’t say what I’ve done

I think I might



'cause we are islands and blinking lights
and
 staring outwards, reaching upwards
catching sirens in the distance

of beating hearts

.

There are pathways in this vacuum
painted floors that lead round corners

trailing IV’s, pushing wheelchairs 

in the dark


and I lose all my sense of time

there are just these moments and smiling visitors

and though I can’t speak to my mind

I try to listen



I drift in floating pools of light

pathways drawn in bloodless strip lights

and though I will make it through this evening

There will be the night



with dreams of sirens and the parking
medication, screaming empathy
,
endless hallways

running circles in the dark



and I am selfish and afraid

and I can’t say anything to take this pain away

so I just stand there and I say

It will be alright



imploring strangers in strange doorways

changing faces that seem uncomplicated

and rising panic in the theatre
from the start



and I slacken and shut down

motor functions that lose telemetry 

speaking noises
in the furrows of the dark.
